Diluted Earnings per Share
Per-share earnings calculated after reflecting the dilutive effect of specified potential common shares such as options, warrants, or convertible instruments under the applicable accounting rules.
Why It Matters
Diluted EPS connects profitability to the changing claim of each share and makes equity compensation, convertible financing, repurchases, and acquisition consideration visible in per-share analysis. It is often more informative than aggregate net income for existing shareholders.
Reading the Measure
A working relation and an interpretive limit for corporate-finance use.
Working relation
Diluted EPS = adjusted earnings available to common shareholders ÷ diluted weighted-average shares
Interpretive caution
Diluted EPS is not a forecast of the final share count, and anti-dilutive instruments may be excluded. Buybacks can increase EPS without improving operating performance or enterprise value.
