Lease Liability
The recognized obligation associated with a lessee's future lease payments under the applicable accounting model, accompanied by a right-of-use asset.
Why It Matters
Leases are a form of financing and resource commitment. Their recognition affects leverage, asset intensity, EBITDA, operating cash-flow presentation, covenant calculations, valuation multiples, and comparisons between firms that lease productive assets and firms that own them.
Reading the Measure
A working relation and an interpretive limit for corporate-finance use.
Interpretive caution
Accounting and cash-flow presentation differ across reporting frameworks and lease types. Valuation and covenant analysis should state whether lease liabilities are treated as debt and adjust the related earnings and cash-flow measures consistently.
