Free Cash Flow to Firm
A valuation-oriented estimate of cash generated by operations after taxes and reinvestment but before payments to debt and equity providers.
Why It Matters
Free cash flow to firm links operating performance to enterprise value and separates business investment from financing choice. It is also useful for studying payout policy, financing constraints, takeover valuation, and the agency costs of cash retained after positive-value investment needs are funded.
Reading the Measure
A working relation and an interpretive limit for corporate-finance use.
Working relation
FCFF ≈ EBIT × (1 − tax rate) + D&A − CapEx − Δ operating working capital
Interpretive caution
FCFF is an analytical construction rather than a standardized financial-statement subtotal. Tax, lease, restructuring, acquisition, and working-capital conventions must match the valuation model.
